One last warm weather ride

It was going to be near 70 and I decided that morning to get one more ride in before things got colder.  I pulled into Highland Park’s parking lot, got out of the truck and heard a hissing.  Sure enough, front tire was leaking:

I wasn’t sure if I was getting any bad luck out of the way in the parking lot or if it was just the beginning.  After getting the spare on, time to go riding.

I was in such a hurry to get going that morning, I forgot that I didn’t have my skidplate on.

Mostly dry, but I still found a little mud:

Several years ago the view from this lookout was great, not so much anymore:

Coming down this hill, if you blow this turn . . .

you’ll be going for a little ride down the side of the hill.

I didn’t think I got going fast enough to get bug splatter:

It looks like all of my bad luck was focused on the flat tire.  The worst thing that happened was this new dent.  I heard the dull thud as I was riding the trail.  I really like riding at HP, but it hasn’t been easy on my pipe.  All the dents in my pipe have come from riding here.

Sucking dirt at Highland Park – 5.17.13 ride

Early in the day, the Lectron was running great and all was good.

Hills,  rocks, roots and ruts . . .

And my pipe/silencer coupler fix worked:

But as the morning went on, the bike started running strange.  The culprit was dirt getting into the intake and impacting the fuel metering of the carb.  In addition to be the first ride with the Lectron, this was also my first ride with a new air box / air boot combination.  In the past I’ve used the KDX airboot with the KX air box and KX air filter.  This new air intake is a KDX airboot, KX airbox and the KDX air filter.  I decided to cut the day short and not risk sucking in any more dirt that I already did.

Once I got home and could examine things, I tracked the problem down to the KDX holder.  See below . . .

Tightening down the nuts to secure everything to the airbox just makes the gap larger.

Some 1/4″ aluminum took care of the warped mating surface:
