New steering stop

I figured I’ve pushed my luck long enough riding with the KXF forks/triple clamps and keeping the stock KX steering stop.  The below picture shows the gap that exists between the frame and triple clamp stops with the fork tubes hitting the tank.

After taking the forks and triple clamp off, it was time to remove the KX stop.

I used some cardboard to mock-up a new stop and then transferred that to some heavy angle iron I’ve had laying around.

New steering stop all done.

Before I did any welding, I removed the electronics and lower bearing race.  I’ve read mixed opinions on the need to remove or disconnect electronics while welding, but for the little time it takes to pull those items I didn’t want to take a chance.

In position and all ready to go.

My ugly welds.  I had a difficult time getting in a good position for the welding.  One thing is for sure, that stop is not coming off.

Painted and just need to let the BlackCote dry.  The BlackCote has held up very well.  I need to find time to strip the bike down, sandblast the brushed on finish and properly spray it on.

Unrelated to the steering stop, but before I put the electronics back on, I always use this stuff on the connectors to keep water out and prevent corrosion.

I just pack the female connector full of the grease and then wipe off the excess that gets pushed out.

All back together.
